Annual Meeting with guest speaker Paul Fisher, Associate Professor
Sunday, October 28, 2018 at 12 noon (Registration begins at 11:30 am)
University of Southern Maine, Glickman Library, University Events Room (7th floor)
Associate Professor Paul Fisher will present The “Barbarous Barbaro”: Art, Travel, and Exoticism in Isabella Stewart Gardner’s Museum. Isabella Stewart Gardner has been described as “Boston’s pre-cinema star,” but her career achievements are more substantial and more feminist than many people know. Her transgressive outlook and adventurous travels strongly influenced her greatest achievement, the building of the Gardner Museum and the installation of her art collection there.
Paul Fisher is a cultural historian and biographer and is currently Associate Professor of American Studies at Wellesley. He has taught at Yale, Wesleyan, Boston University, and Harvard. At Wellesley, he teaches various courses that combine literature, history, and art history. His books include Artful Itineraries: European Art and American Careers in High Culture, 1865-1920 (2000); House of Wits: An Intimate Portrait of the James Family (2008); and The Grand Affair: John Singer Sargent, His Patrons, and Sexuality in the Art World of the Belle Époque (forthcoming).
A buffet luncheon of broiled salmon, vegetarian lasagna, salad, oven roasted potatoes, lemon garlic broccoli, and dessert will be served, along with non-alcoholic beverages. USM can accommodate most special dietary requests if you let us know ahead of time with your RSVP.
Cost: $30 for members, $35 for non-members and guests. Free for current students and Class of 2018.
